Islanders Host NMMI & Honor Veterans at Zions Bank Stadium, Herriman

09/07/2024 : the Utah Islanders reached another milestone in their inaugural season by competing against the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Broncos at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah. This matchup marked the second time in their first season that the Islanders faced a nationally recognized junior college (JUCO) program, following their earlier game against Snow College. Competing against two top-tier JUCO teams in their debut season demonstrates the Islanders’ mission to provide athletes with elite competition and exposure.

While the Broncos ultimately won 40-18, the Islanders showed their trademark resilience and determination, particularly in the second half. Running back Keondre Polanco found his rhythm, breaking three runs over 20 yards, including an electrifying 62-yard touchdown that energized the team. The offense continued to find its stride as Landon Bates and Sawyer Winward made key defensive plays to set up great field position, culminating in a touchdown pass from quarterback Troy Mehn to wide receiver Bachlor Johnson. The Islanders’ special teams also shined, blocking a punt in the end zone to further cut into NMMI’s lead late in the game.

Despite the loss, the Islanders' ability to challenge two powerhouse JUCO programs in their first season is a remarkable accomplishment. It highlights the program's commitment to preparing its athletes for the next level and building a foundation for future success.
