Today Is A New Day for Utah Football
FUI VAKAPUNA NAMED HEAD COACH OF THE UTAH ISLANDERS FOOTBALL PROGRAM
01/10/2025 – The Utah Islanders Football Program almost couldn't wait to announce the hiring of former NFL fullback and BYU standout Fui Vakapuna as the team’s new Head Coach. Vakapuna brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and a passion for developing young athletes to the Islanders organization.
A native of Utah, Vakapuna made his mark in collegiate football as a dynamic and powerful force at Brigham Young University (BYU). Following his success at the collegiate level, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2009 NFL Draft and played in the NFL with the Bengals and other teams. His playing career and experiences in professional football have equipped him with the knowledge and perspective to mentor and inspire the next generation of athletes.
“Fui Vakapuna embodies the values and mission of the Utah Islanders,” said Chris Heliin, Founder of the Utah Islanders. “He's been in those rooms. His experience as a collegiate and professional athlete, combined with his commitment to teaching life lessons through football, makes him the perfect leader to take our program to the next level. We are excited for him to guide our athletes through football and life experiences.”
As head coach, Vakapuna will focus on fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and unity, while preparing athletes for collegiate opportunities and beyond. His leadership aligns with the Islanders’ mission to provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents against top-tier competition, such as Snow College and the New Mexico Military Institute, and gain national recognition.
“I’m honored to join the Utah Islanders family,” said Fui Vakapuna. “Football has been a transformative force in my life, and I look forward to using my experiences to help these young men achieve their dreams. Together, we’ll build a program that the community can be proud of.”
The Utah Islanders have quickly become a trailblazer in Utah football, providing opportunities for college-aged athletes to compete at a high level and develop skills that prepare them for success on the field and in life. With the addition of Fui Vakapuna, the Islanders are poised to strengthen their reputation as a premier football program.
